Kitchen Garden

Organic fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown for our own use.

Strawberries abound in May: picked fresh for breakfast to enjoy as they are, or in strawberry crêpes, omelette soufflé aux fraises, or strawberry shortcake. Brambles - our are like a tart black raspberry - are sugared and baked in crumbles and pastries. Jumbo blackberries in July may be the first course at breakfast with a homemade herbal syrup, perhaps with lemon verbena. Tomatoes are used for bruschetta cocktail hour fare and in quiche and omelets. Peaches and figs are served at breakfast. And in the fall, the wild grapes are gathered for delicious homemade jam.

While the existing pear tree doesn't have very exciting fruit, it has borne reliably enough to convince us to put in Bartlett and Moonglow pear trees that may bear next year. More apple trees have been planted this spring, as well.

Recently, we put in asparagus beds, and look forward to enjoying the produce for years to come. Also new this year are red currant bushes and more blueberry plants.

Our kitchen garden has been aided by Gardens Alive's Complete Pest and Disease Guide and we recommend it to you.
